XL1 vs VX1000: Image Quality Comparision

Here are some shots taken with both the XL1 and VX-1000. I tried to make the shots as similar as possible, but due to the different shapes and sizes of the two cameras, this was quite difficult. Next time I'll bring two tripods and monitors. With one of each, keeping the shots identical was impossible. :-(

Nonetheless, I hope you'll enjoy this tour through the strengths and weaknesses of both cameras.

Because JPEG image compression can affect overall quality, I have included Photoshop versions for the serious student. However, I have examined the originals and the compressed versions, and don't think the latter distorts the comparisions in any meaningful way.

Leaves

A mass of leaves provides a wealth of fine detail. Note the more accurate colour rendition in the XL1 picture. Taken in Burton Chace Park in Marina del Rey.

Flower

A bunch of flowers, waving gently in the breeze. Taken in one of Mulholland Drive's scenic parks. The colours seem more accurate on the XL1, but the VX-1000 picture is certainly more striking.

Big House

This is a large house, positioned on the hill in view of the Mulholland Drive park. Note the additional detail and the more true colours on the XL1 picture.

Old Boat

An old boat in Marina del Rey also yields much fine detail. The VX-1000 beat the XL1 in colour rendition on this picture.

In the Dark

As the light dims, we continue shooting in extremely tough conditions. Note how the XL1 preserves colour and retains detail better than the VX-1000. Note also the fuzziness that's apparent in the VX-1000 picture, especially in the trees. In the video, this shows up much more clearly than in the still capture. Taken in Burton Chace Park in Marina del Rey.
